The Edward Gartland Youth Center in Providenciales was recently gifted with $10,000 thanks to Somewhere Café and Lounge, which raised the funds through its first Cinco De Mayo Weekend of Celebration.
Janet Fraser, General Manager for Somewhere Café and Lounge, who was accompanied by her executive chef, Louis Preston, said she felt thrilled to have embarked on the initiative to assist with the worthy cause.
“We had our first annual Cinco De Mayo Weekend. We teamed up with the Wine Cellar in order to raise some funds in support of the Youth Center, and we managed to raise $10,000 for the donation,” Fraser said.
She said Somewhere Café has been a perennial support of the Youth Center, but was the first time spearheading a fund-raising venture for the youth and community entity.
“We have always had a close relationship with the Youth Center, but this was the first time having an independent Cinco De Mayo Party, and with the support of the Wine Cellar as well as IGA (Supermarkets), GK Foods, Quality (Supermarket), and TCI Distributions, who were kind enough to help with the donations in order to raise the funds,” she said, adding: “We had a great silent auction. So the whole community basically came together and helped us to have great fun weekend and raised money to help the kids.”
Charvis Ferguson, Programme Manager at the Edward Gartland Youth Center was thrilled that the May 5 weekend event was held with the Youth Centre in mind. She said the money would greatly assist with the catalogue of programmes at the facility.
We have a plethora of clubs and programmes here at the Youth Centre, so every donation is a benefit to us. We will be able to allow more students to attend the youth center free of cost and provide more opportunities for them for empowerment though all of these wonderful donations that we are getting. thank you so much, Somewhere Café. We are very appreciative,” Ferguson said.
Among the clubs at the Edward Gartland Youth Center are Sailing, Girls, 100 Black Men and Spanish. There are also a great deal of academic programmes including Information Technology, Math, and Music.
Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for "Fifth of May". It is a yearly celebration held on May 5 to celebrate Mexico's victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
