Gender Affairs Plans Litany Of Events To Celebrate Women in March

The Department of Gender Affairs, in observance of International Women’s Day, which is March 8, will once again join the world in celebrating women who have devoted themselves to the advancement of digital innovation and technology in the TCI.

Each year International Women’s Day seeks to celebrate women who have contributed to their country’s nation-building.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, Transportation, Broadcasting, Energy, Utilities and Telecommunications, under which the Department of Gender Affairs falls, said it salutes all women across the TCI who have made significant contributions in their various spheres of expertise.

However, in keeping with this year’s theme, special attention to women and girls in the field of Information Technology will come in for sharp focus.

Director of Gender Affairs, Mrs. Carolyn Dickenson shared: “making the contribution of women and girls in the field of Information Technology visible is the aim of this year’s International Women’s Day”.

The ministry stated that women’s contribution to the field of digital innovation is often underestimated as there are less than 20% of women employees in the field, according to United Nations data.

The theme “Women Forging Change Through Digital Innovation and Technology Towards Gender Equality and Sustainable Development” addresses the need to provide women and girls with the desired resources so they can have a greater reach in the world of digital innovation and technology. Despite their many achievements, women & girls remain underrepresented in the field.

As we continue to strive for women & girls to receive desired opportunities for their full and equal participation in TCI, we stop to celebrate those that have stood their ground in a male-dominated culture of science and thus made an indelible mark on the TCI. We, therefore, invite the general public to join us as we applaud these women & girls from across the territory.

Together we can attain a future where the world of digital innovation & technology in the TCI is gender-equal at its core, serving all, for the benefit of all, while achieving realistic sustainable development goals through our vision 2040 framework. As a department, we firmly believe that to create a more gender-responsive technology world, we need to inspire and empower the next generation of females to pursue and develop their careers in technology and become innovators.

In observance of International Women’s Day, the Department of Gender Affairs will be hosting several celebratory events across the TCI.
