A mouthwatering treat awaits local football fans on Saturday at the Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA) Academy Field in Providenciales, where league leaders Sharks will try to stave off the late charge by Blue Hills FC as the curtains come down on the Apertura segment of Provo Premier League.
That game, which was originally scheduled as the 6 pm curtain-raiser of a doubleheader, will now be the feature encounter, owning to the consideration that it is the title decider.
Now, the curtain-raiser will see Beaches, who were knocked out of contention last week by Blue Hills FC, going up against another out-of-contention team Flamingo FC, at 6 pm, with both teams playing for pride.
Sharks could have virtually sealed the deal from last week had they beaten the lowly but pesky Teachers FC. Had they won, their tally would have been pushed to an unassailable 22 points with one game in hand.
Even though they will only need to avoid defeat in Saturday’s encounter to lift the trophy, the mood in that camp might probably be a mixture of confidence and nerves.
Blue Hills fought hard to defeat Beaches 4-2 in a cracker of a game to put their points tally to 19, one point less than Sharks.
And while Sharks might be harbouring a few jitters, they will take comfort in the record that during the season they were never beaten by Blue Hills FC. And so, they remain the favourites to lift the title.
On the other hand, Blue Hills FC must consider themselves to be in with a great shot at the title, having blasted through tables with convincing wins. They understand that a draw will not help their cause, and so, they will set out to make history in the league, which is beating Sharks for the first time this season and to make their first lien on the title.
Following the conclusion of the Apertura segment of the league, attention will then turn to the knockout competition, which begins next week.
