The Turks and Caicos Island Airports Authority (TCIAA) has announced that in the wake of the approaching Tropical Storm Fiona all airports will be closed on Monday 19th September at 9a.m.
“
Flights suspension will affect all airports within the TCI, including Providenciales, Grand Turk, North Caicos, South Caicos and Salt Cay,” a news release from the TCIAA said late Saturday, stating that the closure is to ensure that all necessary preparation are made to safeguard life and property.
“This time is needed to ensure that air traffic control airfield equipment and security equipment at all airports are properly secured ahead of the storm. Process must be completed during favourable weather conditions,” the TCIAA further explained.
It added: “The TCIAA remains committed to the safety of all aircraft, passengers, team members and other users of its airports. We regret any inconvenience the suspension of flight operations may cause.”
In the meantime, the TCIAA is asking those scheduled to travel during next week to contact their airlines to work out their departure.
“Travelers are asked to contact their respective airlines throughout the weekend for flights potential rescheduling of their flights.
“The TCIAA is closely monitoring the storm’s progress and will update every 12 hours or as necessary,” the release concluded.
