Deputy Leader of the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM), Robert Been, has sharply criticized the state of schools in the Turks and Caicos Islands, describing their condition as "deplorable" at the start of the new academic year.
In a public statement, Been expressed his disappointment with the government’s failure to improve school facilities before the school year began, highlighting issues such as unmaintained grounds, unpainted buildings, and dilapidated classroom containers. He referenced the Ianthe Pratt Primary School in The Bight, Providenciales, where grass was overgrown, and the structures had not received necessary repairs.
“I stand deeply concerned and profoundly disappointed as we begin a new school year under conditions that can only be described as deplorable,” Been said. “Reports from across the islands, including a disturbing account from the Ianthe Pratt Primary School in The Bight, Providenciales, reveal that our children and teachers are being forced into an environment that is unfit for learning, health, and safety.
“It has come to the public’s attention that the grounds of the Ianthe Pratt Primary School are overgrown with unkempt grass, and the buildings remain unpainted, with no visible repairs or preparations made ahead of the academic year.”
Even more concerning is the condition of the container classrooms, which are terribly rusty and should be remedied immediately due to the significant health risks they pose to both students and teachers.
The most pressing concern raised was the condition of container classrooms, which were described as rusty and a potential health risk to both students and teachers. Been called this situation unacceptable and placed blame squarely on the Progressive National Party (PNP) government for not prioritizing the education system's infrastructure.
He also criticized Hon. Rachel Taylor, the Minister of Education, for claiming progress in a recent press release, arguing that her statements do not align with the conditions faced by many schools. Been alleged that while the Enid Capron Primary School in Taylor’s constituency received special attention, other schools across the islands were neglected, calling this disparity unfair and reflective of a government more concerned with optics than equitable treatment.
Been emphasized that the PDM would not tolerate the neglect of the education system, asserting that education is essential to the nation’s future. He urged the PNP government to take immediate action to address these issues, insisting that students and teachers deserve better facilities.
"This is an urgent call for action—our future depends on it," Been concluded, calling for the government to rectify the situation without delay.
