The Department of Agriculture in the Turks and Caicos Islands has begun an active dog trapping exercise aimed at improving community safety and reducing the growing concerns surrounding stray and uncontrolled dogs across the islands.

Residents in several communities have expressed concerns over roaming dogs, incidents of dog bites, and threats to livestock and private property. In response, the Department has launched a coordinated effort designed to safely capture unconfined dogs while encouraging responsible pet ownership.
Officials explained that the exercise has three primary objectives: reducing dog bite incidents and protecting the public, safeguarding livestock and property, and limiting the spread of diseases that can affect both animals and humans.
As trapping teams move through communities, dog owners are being reminded to keep their pets properly secured and confined at all times. Authorities stressed that dogs should not be allowed to roam freely and must remain on a leash when in public spaces. Pet owners are also encouraged to ensure their dogs are microchipped or carry engraved identification collars to assist with quick identification if animals are collected.
“Let us work together for a safer, healthier community,” the Department urged in its public appeal.
The Department is also asking pet owners to act quickly if they suspect their dog has been trapped during the exercise. Owners are advised to contact the Department of Agriculture within 72 hours to claim their pets and verify ownership.
Officials say the initiative is not intended to punish pet owners but rather to create a safer environment where residents, children, livestock, and animals can coexist responsibly.
The Department hopes that with greater public cooperation and responsible pet ownership practices, communities across the Turks and Caicos Islands will become safer and healthier places for everyone.
