
Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance Hon. E. Jay Saunders and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Athenee Harvey-Basden are representing the Turks and Caicos Islands at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Caribbean Development Bank in St. Lucia.
The meeting started June 12 and will end on June 23.
The Annual Meeting brings together the Bank’s highest decision-making body to discuss key development challenges facing the region and innovative solutions. This year’s meeting is being held under the chairmanship of the Hon. Philip J. Pierre, Prime Minister of Saint Lucia. Pierre took over the reins from Turks and Caicos Islands’ Premier Hon. Washington Misick.
The 52nd Annual Meeting of the bank was held in Turks and Caicos last year as well.
The theme of this year’s Meeting is “Marshalling Finance for Development: Access to Adequate and Affordable Financing.”
Sustainable financial solutions for regional development and greater inclusion of private sector partners are high on the agenda. A focus of the Meeting is also deepening the Bank’s outreach to the youth and strengthen engagement with potential and upcoming young regional leaders.
This year the 23rd William G. Demas Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Keynote speaker, Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, who is expected shine the spotlight on the progress made on loss and damage in climate negotiations. That lecture takes place at 7:30p.m. June 20.
Chairman of the CDB Board of Governors and Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Philip J. Pierre addressed the Opening Ceremony earlier in the day. CDB President, Dr. Gene Leon delivered the keynote statement.
Among the subtopics discussed at the event are: gender inequality and issues affecting Indigenous Peoples'; climate financing to addressing gender inequalities in the Region. The event also hosted its first Indigenous Peoples' Forum.
