Fraudulent Facebook accounts impersonating Her Excellency the Governor, Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam, have surfaced, The Governor’s Office has revealed.
More alarmingly, the statement indicated that unsuspecting individuals have been targeted with messages through these fake accounts, soliciting money.
The Governor's Office has identified two fraudulent Facebook accounts, namely 'Dileeni Deniel Selvaratnam' and 'Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam, Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands Account,' both of which are entirely fabricated.
“If you happen to receive any form of communication from accounts using these names, it is strongly advised to ignore them, especially if the correspondence involves requests for financial payments,” the Governor’s Office advised in the press release. “The matter has been officially reported to both the police and Facebook for further investigation.”
The Governor's Office has also used the opportunity to remind the public to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of official pages while using any social media platform, including Facebook. Individuals are urged to be wary of friend requests and private messages from public figures, particularly those that involve representations about official business, solicitations for money, or requests for personal information.
The Governor’s Office has emphasized that no official business is conducted through social media private messaging platforms, further advising that correspondence from Her Excellency the Governor and the Governor's Office will be conducted exclusively through official government email accounts.
The Governor’s Office is also encouraging the the public to report any suspicious activity promptly, reiterating that the only recognized Facebook account of Her Excellency the Governor and the Governor's Office is titled 'Turks and Caicos Islands, Governor’s Office,' and the sole official Instagram account is '@governorturksandcaicos.' The public is advised to rely on these verified accounts for official information and updates.
