Students in Grand Turk were given a front-row seat to the fast-paced world of media production last week, with the hosting of the inaugural Youth Media Expo.
From working behind the camera to understanding the intricacies of editing, production, and broadcasting, the event introduced students to the many moving parts of the media industry.

the event was catered to 3rd, 4th and 5th formers. Approximately 300 children attended the event. A total of 12 organizations took part in the event.
The expo was the brainchild of well-known media practitioner Greg Been of Genesis Next Media, who partnered with the Ministry of Education as part of the annual National Youth Week celebrations. The initiative, organizers say, is aimed at sparking interest in the creative arts while equipping young people with skills that could translate into career opportunities.

Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Rachel Taylor, praised Been’s vision and commitment to investing in the island’s youth. She described the event as a testament to his dedication to giving back to the community and supporting the next generation.
“Greg, your dedication to ensuring this event is held here in Grand Turk is commendable,” Minister Taylor said. “This initiative not only highlights your passion but also symbolizes your commitment to helping our young people discover their potential in media and the creative arts.”

Been assembled an experienced team of professionals spanning every corner of the industry, from photographers, videographers, and film editors to journalists and social media content creators. Students had the opportunity to interact with practitioners, ask questions, and get hands-on exposure to equipment and techniques.

Minister Taylor also used the occasion to outline the Ministry’s broader mission to empower creatives across the Turks and Caicos Islands. She announced that in October, the Department of Culture will launch a new creative registry, a database designed to connect with artists, support their professional development, and create pathways for training and entrepreneurship.

“As the Minister of Culture, our mission is clear: to develop and empower our creatives,” Taylor said. “This registry will allow us to stay connected with you, provide resources to help you grow, and open real opportunities for advancement in the creative industries.”

For the students, the Youth Media Expo was both educational and inspiring. Many expressed excitement about the chance to step into the shoes of media professionals and to see how their own creativity could lead to future careers.

The event’s success, stakeholders agree, highlights the importance of exposing young people to practical experiences outside the classroom. Organizers are hopeful that the Youth Media Expo will not only become an annual feature of National Youth Week but also a launching pad for the next wave of creative talent emerging not only from Grand Turk, across the island chain.
