The Guyanese community in the Turks and Caicos Islands marked Guyana’s Independence celebrations with a series of community-centred initiatives aimed at giving back and strengthening civic pride.

As part of activities commemorating Guyana’s Independence anniversary, members of the Guyanese community joined together to repaint three of the most frequently used pedestrian crossings in downtown Providenciales. The crossings upgraded during the initiative were located at Sunny Foods in Blue Hills, the MoneyGram area downtown, and near the Sports Centre downtown.

Organizers said the effort reflected the community’s commitment to contributing positively to the place they now call home.
“We value where we reside and share in the community spirit,” organizers noted, emphasizing that the project was designed not only to beautify the area but also to improve safety for pedestrians.
The repainting project formed part of a broader series of activities, which also included a Guyanese Association blood drive, another community-focused initiative held as part of the Independence celebrations.

Guyana celebrates its Independence Day on May 26 each year, commemorating the country’s separation from British rule in 1966. Formerly known as British Guiana, the nation became independent under the leadership of its first Prime Minister, Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham.

This year’s celebrations also highlighted the continued contributions of Guyanese nationals living abroad, including those residing in the Turks and Caicos Islands, who continue to play an active role in community development and social initiatives.
