Haitian Woman Perished As Illegal Vessel Makes Landfall

A tragic discovery was made on Friday when the body of a female, believed to be from Haiti, was found in Pigeon Pond, Providenciales.

This incident occurred as law enforcement authorities detained 146 illegal immigrants arriving on three sloops over the weekend.

A police press release stated that the migrant detentions were as follows: 66 on Sunday, June 9th, 2024; 32 on Saturday, June 8th; and 48 on Friday, June 7th. The female's body was discovered during a joint operation in Blue Hills on Friday when 48 individuals were apprehended along a beach.

Extensive searches in the surrounding areas led to the discovery of her body at Pigeon Pond, located in the Northwest Point Nature Reserve. The police suspect this death is related to an attempted illegal entry by vessel, and investigations are ongoing.

On Sunday, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force intercepted a sloop carrying 55 males and 11 females, handing them over to the TCI Immigration Task Force for processing. The previous day, the marine branch of the RTCIPF intercepted a blue and white fiberglass boat with 26 males and six females 27 miles east of South Caicos. These interceptions followed a tip-off from a US Customs and Border Force aircraft.

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Specialist Tactical Operations, Mat Newton, praised the cooperation of various law enforcement agencies in these operations. He emphasized the importance of national security and the severe risks posed by illegal attempts to enter the TCI, especially under adverse weather conditions. Newton urged those involved in facilitating and encouraging illegal migration to consider the grave consequences and to desist from such perilous undertakings. He also expressed gratitude to the community for reporting suspicious activities and encouraged continued vigilance.

The RTCIPF said it remains committed to securing the borders and ensuring the safety of all residents, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the Radar, Marine, and Drone units, the TCI Regiment, the Immigration Task Force, and the Customs Department in these successful operations.
