The Department of Social Development and Welfare, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Public Safety and Utilities, will be joining the rest of the world in observing the month of March, as National Professional Social Work Month under the theme ‘Empowering Social Workers: Inspiring Action, leading Change’.

This year’s theme aims to raise awareness of the uniqueness and importance of the social work profession and highlight the need for the government, private sector, stakeholders and community at large to support, collaborate, and advocate for resources, laws, and legislation to enable social workers to carry out their life-affirming work.

The highlight of this year Social Work Month will include a social work conference with special guest Mrs. Felisha R. McBride, Executive Director of the Grand Bahama Resilience Center, from Grand Bahama, Bahamas, and an awards ceremony to highlight the outstanding performance of social workers.

As the country celebrates Social Work Month and its Social Workers, the government has extended a heartfelt thanks to the men and women who have paved the way for this noble profession. To our current Social Workers, we sound the alarm for your resilience, empathy and love for the job that you do and the people you serve.

According to the ministry, as community weavers, social workers have a responsibility to do their utmost to repair the damage and reconstruct as much of the devastation that social, economic, familial, and systemic shortcomings leave in the lives of countless individuals.

It noted that while it is impossible for social workers to completely eradicate systemic socioeconomic issues, great expectations are still placed on them by society to use their invisible wands and work their magicto do so. Despite being undermined as a profession, social workers continue to push beyond their limits to knit the social fabric of these Turks and Caicos Islands.
