The following are Remarks by Hon. Otis C Morris, Minister of Home Affairs & Telecommunications on the Nation Youth Day Recognition Event.
Good Afternoon,
It is a great privilege to stand before you today as we recognize the invaluable contributions of our youth in the Turks and Caicos Islands and discuss an urgent issue that affects us all—violence in our communities. Today's theme, "Reclaiming Our Community: Youth Solutions to Violence," is both timely and powerful, highlighting the role that our young people must play in building a peaceful, united, and prosperous society.
Violence is not just a social issue; it’s a spiritual one as well. It affects the mind, heart, and soul of individuals and families, tearing at the very fabric of our society. But as a people grounded in faith, we are reminded by the words of the Apostle Paul in *Romans 12:21, which says, *"Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." This scripture calls on us, and especially our youth, to rise above the hatred, anger, and violence we witness around us. It tells us that goodness has the power to conquer evil, and it starts with each of us—by our actions, our words, and our choices.
Young people, you have the energy, creativity, and passion to be agents of change. We must encourage you not only to reject violence but to actively promote peace and reconciliation in your schools, neighborhoods, and homes. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said in *Matthew 5:9, *"Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God." Each of you has the ability to be a peacemaker, to bring others together in understanding and unity.
The root causes of violence are complex—poverty, broken homes, lack of education, and negative peer influences are just a few. Yet, with faith and determination, you can be the solution. The Bible reminds us in *1 Timothy 4:12, *"Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." This is your charge today: be examples of righteousness and courage in the face of adversity.
As Minister of Home Affairs, I am committed to supporting our youth with the resources, mentorship, and opportunities you need to excel. But I also know that the most important solutions come from within. Your ideas, your leadership, and your moral strength are what will truly reclaim our community.
In closing, let us remember that peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice and love. As it says in *Proverbs 3:5-6, *"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." If we place our trust in God, He will guide us on a path that leads to peace, prosperity, and unity.
Together, we can reclaim our community. Together, we can stop the cycle of violence. Together, we can create a future filled with hope.
Thank you, and may God bless you all.
