Wheeland Gunslaying marks the 24th murder since the start of 2024

Hon. Kyle Knowles, Minister of Utilities and Public Safety, and Member of Parliament for Wheeland is condemning the killing of South Dock man, 29-year-old Duren Jamine Been, who was shot in the Wheeland Constituency on Thursday night.
According to police reports, shortly after 8 pm on the day in question, officers of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force received reports of gunshots in Wheeland. Officers responded, and upon arrival the lifeless body of a male victim.
Been’s death marks the 24 murder in the Turks and Caicos Islands since the start of 2024.
Head of Crime, Safeguarding, Public Protection and Intelligence Superintendent Dean Holden said, based on preliminary investigations, two men were shot.
“One of the victims, who has been identified as Duren Jamine Been, 29, of South Dock, was found motionless on the ground,” Holden said. “While at the location, officers were told that another male victim had also received gunshot injuries and was rushed to a medical facility for treatment. While investigators determine what happened overnight, I would like to extend condolences to the family and friends of the deceased man,” Holden said.
Knowles, in a news release, said he was appalled by the senseless killing, while advocating for a police post to be erected in his constituency.
“As representative for ED 10 Wheeland and West Caicos, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to those who lost a loved one from last night's senseless gun violence. I also wish the other victim a speedy recovery.
“It is a sad occasion for our constituency. I condemn such acts of violence in our community,” Knowles asserted, while applauding the police for their alacrity in response to the incident.
“Officers of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force responded quickly to the area when notified of this heinous act, and subsequently another robbery close by. On that note, I would like to thank the officers for their hard work and effort. This also reiterates the need for a community police post in the Wheeland constituency,” Knowles said.
He added: “We, as a community, must work together in bringing justice and closure to these families and the community. Knowles sentiments were also expressed by Holden, who pleaded with the community tell what they know about the incident.
“I would also like to remind members of the public to come forward with any information concerning both incidents. If you know anything, please tell us confidentially or anonymously”.
“The RT&CIPF are pursuing all leads available to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. Again, I urge the public to pay attention, share our Wanted Posters, and remain vigilant.
“The RT&CIPF is asking anyone with information that may help in these investigations to contact the closest police station, 911, the Serious Crime Unit at 231-1842, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800- 8477 to provide any information anonymously.
“Additionally, individuals are encouraged to download the Crime Stoppers P3 app to share information,” Holden said.
