The opposition Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) is calling on authorities to urgently restore banking services in South Caicos.
PDM Caretaker and Candidate Hynetta Forbes has expressed deep concern over the absence of a bank on the island, emphasizing that the only Automated Banking Machine (ATM) available is often non-functional.
"For far too long, the people of South Caicos have faced challenges with unreliable ATM services," Forbes stated. "The recent two-month period without a working ATM is unacceptable and demands immediate action. Words and promises are no longer sufficient; we need concrete results."
Forbes criticized the prolonged delay in restoring reliable banking services, highlighting the community's dependence on neighboring islands for basic banking needs. She stressed that this situation is both unreasonable and unjust, and called for immediate steps to address the issue.
"The time for lip service and delay is over. We need tangible actions that will bring about positive change," she urged. "South Caicos is a vibrant community with hardworking individuals who deserve better."
Forbes also proposed the installation of multiple ATMs on the island to prevent future disruptions. "Having only one functioning ATM poses significant risks and inconveniences for our community. A backup system must be in place to guarantee uninterrupted access to essential banking services, even in the event of technical difficulties."
Additionally, Forbes highlighted the importance of installing an ATM at the South Caicos airport in anticipation of upcoming international flights. This, she argued, would not only cater to incoming travelers but also provide a convenient banking option for local residents.
"We must not allow our community to be left behind, deprived of the basic banking services that are readily available on other neighboring islands," Forbes declared. "I will continue to advocate tirelessly on behalf of my community until necessary actions are taken. It is your duty as elected officials to ensure the fulfillment of the promises you made."
The PDM is urging the relevant authorities to prioritize the needs of South Caicos and take immediate steps to restore and improve banking services on the island.
