Hynetta Karen Forbes, the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) caretaker/candidate for South Caicos is calling on the ruling Progressive National Party (PNP) to pay urgent attention to the unfinished boat ramp on that island, which she said is has become a safety hazard.
In a news release, Forbes said the ramp was repair halfway and now left to rot away.
The following is her statement on the marine infrastructure:
I am calling on the Minister of Infrastructure and Member of Parliament of South Caicos, to urgently address the concerning situation regarding the incomplete repair work on the ramp in South Caicos.
Upon my research, I have found out that this work has been halted for over two months, with materials such as gravel, cement, and steel left unattended on the site. The unfinished steel has been left lying on the ground, as seen in the attached pictures.
This incomplete work has left individuals in the community, especially the fishermen, in a vulnerable position. This half-finished work not only jeopardizes the safety of the residents and businesses in South Caicos but also reflects a lack of commitment to ensuring the proper maintenance of essential infrastructure in this area.
As the capital of the fishing industry and home to numerous local men, including those used by the School for Field Studies and hotels, South Caicos relies heavily on functional and safe infrastructure like the ramp. The current state of incomplete repair work is unacceptable and puts the livelihoods of the community at risk.
I urge you to investigate this matter thoroughly and take immediate action to rectify the situation. The safety and well-being of the people of South Caicos is my top priority.
It is imperative that the ramp repair be completed to the required standards without further delay. The community of South Caicos deserves better than unfinished and substandard work that compromises their safety and livelihoods.
Your prompt attention and decisive action on this issue are urgently needed.
