Dear Mr. Editor,
February 19, 2021, the people of the TCI returned this present PNP government, led by Hon. Charles Washington Misick to an overwhelming victory 14-1, a clear mandate to govern these Turks & Caicos Islands.
After a year of governance, the Hon. Premier in his first State of the State Address, and first year anniversary to the Nation stated that by December of 2022, he and his government would be pursuing constitutional talks. I was and I’m sure others were astonished by this revelation and wondered why the Hon. Premier and his 14-1 government was slothful and lackadaisical in their approach to seized every opportunity to change the plight of TCIslanders.
This Premier who was elected in 2012 under the Hon. Rufus Ewing Administration and tasked with the responsibility of the Finance Portfolio, understood quite well the atrocities under which the people have had to endure because of a draconian, apartheid constitution that was shoved down the throats of TCIslanders. This constitution as this Premier and his 14-1 government know it does not help or favor TCIslanders.
There is absolutely nothing in it to empower TCIslanders and as always our elected representatives have repeatedly stated how their hands are tied. To add insult to injury; Why Premier Misick seemed quite comfortable to commence constitutional talks two (2) years later into a four (4) term? Why would Premier Misick and his 14-1 government prefer to see TCIslanders suffer and struggle under such difficult circumstances when they have the power, and were given a clear mandate to change the plight of TCIslanders and empower us?
Mr. Editor, this Premier Misick and his 14-1 government boast about the economic boom and their historical budgetary accomplishments, but who’s really benefiting and making the money in our country? Mr. Editor, when we look at the last salary review and the gargantuan salary increases by Premier Misick and his 14-1 government, I understand why there is no urgency by this government to help turn the plight of TCIslanders around. Now that election is around the corner, they can find the people who they neglected for 3 plus years, cut ribbons and tar roads because there are other agendas to be fulfilled, so they must return to government.
The agendas Mr. Editor is not in the best interest of TCIslanders and this country. The intention of this 14-1 PNP government is to buy this election because they must carry out promises of the special interest groups who fund and are funding them.
Mr. Editor here’s what we’re faced with as a country by this lackluster and out of touch, uncaring, sleeping 14-1 PNP government. On Wednesday 22 May, 2024 the British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak dissolved UK Parliament for elections to be held July 4th, 2024.
This simply means any talks for constitutional amendments has come to a complete hault, since reading H.E the Governor’s recent statement on constitutional amendments going forward, stated that the proposals submitted for constitutional reform should go before Privy Council in July, 2024. Mr. Editor can you or myself predict the outcome of the UK elections? That is highly unlikely.
Which means that if a Labor government is returned at the polls, negotiations will no doubt start over because you will now have a new administration to deal with. As a TCI Nation a ruling Labor government means we're looking at liberalism and an agnostic approach somewhat to governance which would put Turks and Caicos in a precarious situation. We’re better off with a conservative government, even though none show any real concern for TCI and its affairs. A MISSED OPPORTUNITY by this sleeping 14-1 PNP government.
Mr. Editor I read the potential amendments for our constitution, but was yet again disappointed in Premier Misick and his 14-1 uncaring government. If any democratically elected government is going to effectively govern, advance the rights and wishes of its people, one of the most pertinent issues for discussion is the matter with the governor being dismissed from his/her role as Cabinet Chair.
The Premiership in any other Overseas Territory carries the autonomy it is designed to have. Why does Premier Misick continue to enjoy and allow the British to continue to be a strong hand; It makes absolutely no sense because as long as the Governor is in Cabinet, every decision will continue to be influenced by those who represent the interests of the British. You know what Mr. Editor, this Premier and his 14-1 government will continue to advance the British agenda.
Mr. Editor I was quite surprised by another critical area not a constitutional amendment but an area which could have given TCIslanders some level of empowerment and the opportunity to get residential plots of land If only to build homes. Premier Misick and his 14-1 government failed to come up with a land policy for over (3) years to help empower TCIslanders. There is absolutely no reason that it couldn’t have been done.
The Premier and his 14-1 government made us all believe that the wheel had to be re-invented or a constitutional decision had to be made to have this done and this wasn’t the case. Imagine that Mr. Editor! Rome is burning and there is no immediate need to extinguish the fire. The people continue to be deceived, neglected and ignored.
I listened intently to the Hon. Deputy Premier in the House of Assembly a few months ago with a colossal amount of excuses as to why it wasn’t done. I would kindly inform the Hon. Deputy Premier that the people were listening and they knew he was disingenuous and mendacious .
Mr. Editor why is it that the land policy that is now being proposed by Premier Misick and his 14-1 government to be under a Permanent Secretary in the Governor’s office? The black, red and grey tape continues, and our people are left with a 6 for a 9. Mr. Editor, is this the best this 14-1 government could have come up with after 3 and half years?
As a matter of concern, it is alleged that their plan is to give large plots of land to their cronies who will be qualified to get large sums of money from this PNP government to do residential homes. This is wrong on all fronts and H.E the Governor must do a check on this. This is not only laughable and corrupt, but a disaster in the making.
Why can’t TCIslanders be given the opportunity to own their land and build the homes of their choice and liking? Further Mr. Editor because of scarceness of land those persons who have any back rent/arrears on land should be given full amnesty without strings attached.
This is our country and if persons can come here, squat on our land and a department be put in place to regularize them, then TCIslanders who have land, residential/commercial and cannot proceed with any development because of rent/arrears, should be given full amnesty.
It is alleged that the government has been spending millions of dollars of our monies purchasing supporters, families and cronies properties at overvalued prices and some were not even evaluated. Why has this been going unchecked?
What the government should have been doing is purchasing large plots of land with our monies so that we can begin to preserve land for now and generations unborn. TCIslanders they intend to buy us in this next election because they will sell us out to the highest bidder should we make the mistake and return them to office to collect their pensions and padded salaries.
Mr. Editor may God bless you and may he continue to bless our beautiful by nature Turks and Caicos Islands.
