This week's Voices from the Streets features a conversation with Lorenzo David Smith, a proud son of the Turks and Caicos Islands, a gifted technician, devoted father, and man of faith.
Lorenzo uses his technical expertise to serve others as a Senior Technician at Graceway IGA, while also dedicating himself to his family and sharing God's love in the community. Lorenzo believes the young men of our islands have tremendous potential, but too often their voices go unheard or are dismissed.
He emphasised the importance of creating safe, supportive spaces where young people can express themselves without fear of judgment, receive guidance in making positive decisions, and be encouraged to pursue meaningful opportunities.
When discussing crime, Lorenzo highlighted the need for increased police presence across Providenciales by establishing additional police stations and recruiting more highly trained officers. He believes that building stronger relationships between law enforcement and the public is essential to reducing crime and creating safer communities.
Greater visibility, accountability, and trust, he argues, would strengthen both police services and public cooperation. While Lorenzo appreciates the assistance of neighbouring countries in addressing crime, he firmly believes that the long-term goal should be to train, develop, and promote local Turks and Caicos Islanders to take the lead in protecting our communities and borders. As he puts it, "This is our country, and we should have the first opportunity to serve and safeguard it."
Lorenzo also calls on everyone who chooses to live in the Turks and Caicos Islands to embrace it as their home by respecting our values, supporting our people, and challenging negative stereotypes about our culture and traditions. He believes that real change begins with personal responsibility. By holding ourselves accountable for our actions and encouraging others to do the same, regardless of who they are or where they come from, we can build a nation that we are all proud to call home.
Call to Action: Support, Don't Judge
Lorenzo's message is simple but powerful: before we criticise, let us listen; before we judge, let us support. Every young person deserves a chance to be heard, guided, and encouraged to reach their full potential. This week, challenge yourself to make a difference. Mentor a young person, offer a word of encouragement, support a community initiative, or simply take the time to listen.
Together, we can create a culture where people are lifted up rather than torn down, where opportunities replace obstacles, and where every voice matters.
