the sample suspected to contain V. cholera was, in fact, positive. Through extended testing
The Sample was sent to CARPHA on Sunday, June 11th, 2023, by the Ministry of Health and Human Services (MoHHS), after health officials became suspicious that the symptoms being experienced by a patient pointed to that conclusion.
"The MoHHS is very grateful to the team at CARPHA for providing a timely result that will further inform its response to this case. The MoHHS is also thankful to the team in our own National Public Health Laboratory, who were able to perform the initial testing on equipment received from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) as a part of its ongoing laboratory strengthening program," statement from the MInistry of Health said.
"The National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) is actively developing additional capacity to provide in-country confirmation of cholera cases in the Turks and Caicos Islands," the statement further said, noting that no other case was detected.
"Fortunately, there have been no further cases of suspected cholera in the TCI. However, the Ministry remains vigilant in light of the ongoing outbreak in Hispaniola, with which the TCI has close trade and travel links," the statement further noted.
The MoHHS said it will welcome a team from the UKHSA this week who will provide technical support to strengthen the TCI’s preparedness and response to cholera.
"The MoHHS remains vigilant for new and re-emerging health concerns. The general public is being reminded to seek medical attention immediately if you think you or a member of your family might have cholera. Early treatment is essential," the statement added.
the populace is urged to take proper precautions when traveling to areas with confirmed cases of cholera.
