United Way Turks and Caicos Islands proudly launched the Deputy Governor’s Authors Book Challenge on Tuesday night, December 2nd, in honor of Her Excellency Anya Williams, Deputy Governor. The initiative was created in partnership with her as a tribute to her seven years of continuous commitment to the United Way TCI Reading Programme and her unwavering presence at every major literacy event since the programme began.

From the very first year of the Yes I Can Read movement to this week’s celebration, Her Excellency has stood beside the children of the Turks and Caicos Islands, reading with them, encouraging them and championing literacy as a pathway to opportunity. Her support has never been ceremonial. It has been personal, hands on and grounded in genuine care for the development of young readers.
The newly launched Authors Book Challenge is a national invitation for children to create their own stories, explore their imagination and discover the confidence that emerges when they express themselves through writing. The challenge aims to inspire a new generation of young authors while reinforcing the message that every child’s voice matters.
Chairman Mark A. Fulford expressed the organisation’s appreciation for Her Excellency’s contribution.
“For seven years, the Deputy Governor has stood with us, read with our children and championed the belief that literacy is the first great equalizer. Launching this Authors Challenge in her honor is our way of saying we see your commitment, we value your leadership and because of you more children in these Islands will discover their own voices.”
CEO Claudine Ewing echoed the sentiment.
“Her Excellency has been a constant friend to United Way TCI. She shows up for the children and for the mission. This challenge honors her years of support and invites every child in TCI to write their story, just as she has encouraged them to read.”
During the launch, Deputy Governor H.E. Anya Williams shared her excitement about the initiative.
“I firmly believe that every child has a story to tell. It is our responsibility to nurture their creativity and allow their voices to shine. This challenge provides an opportunity for children to express themselves and understand that their words have power. I am genuinely enthusiastic about this remarkable initiative that encourages aspiring writers to explore their imaginations. I also extend my sincere gratitude to United Way TCI for all of the amazing work that they continue to do in the Turks and Caicos Islands.”
The launch of the Deputy Governor’s Authors Book Challenge represents a meaningful new chapter in literacy advancement for the Turks and Caicos Islands. It also stands as a testament to Her Excellency’s longstanding partnership with United Way TCI and her continued leadership in uplifting the next generation.
