Young Swimmers Impress at 2026 Goodwill Champs

Four young swimmers representing the Turks and Caicos Islands delivered encouraging performances at the 30th Goodwill Swimming Championships, held from August 14–16, 2026, at the National Aquatic Centre in Balmain, Couva.
The national delegation comprised Isabelle Martin, Samuel Martin, Michael Martin and Daniel Martin. The swimmers were accompanied by Team Manager Mrs. Ella Martin and Team Coach Mr. Bennett Williams.
Although the team did not earn medals, the swimmers demonstrated significant development by improving their previous times in all 15 legally completed races recorded during the championships. Collectively, the four swimmers reduced their times by approximately one minute and 47 seconds.
Eleven-year-old Daniel Martin produced the team’s largest combined improvement, reducing his previous times by a total of 45 seconds across four events.
Daniel placed 18th in the Boys’ 11–12 200-metre freestyle with a time of 3:21.52, improving by an impressive 20.93 seconds. He also placed 22nd in the 50-metre freestyle in 36.76, an improvement of 8.75 seconds.
He completed the 50-metre butterfly in 47.32, placing 21st and improving by 7.57 seconds. Daniel also recorded 49.02 in the 50-metre backstroke, finishing 20th and improving by 7.75 seconds.
Seven-year-old Isabelle Martin was the youngest member of the Turks and Caicos Islands team. Competing in the Girls’ 8-and-under division, she recorded substantial improvements in both of her events.
Isabelle finished 19th in the 50-metre freestyle with a time of 59.02, improving by 12.51 seconds. She also placed 19th in the 50-metre backstroke with a time of 1:07.41, reducing her previous time by 9.73 seconds. Her combined improvement across the two races was 22.24 seconds.
Samuel Martin, competing in the Boys’ 9–10 age group, improved in all five of his events for a combined reduction of 33.46 seconds.
Samuel recorded his biggest improvement in the 100-metre freestyle, finishing in 1:40.34 and reducing his previous time by 10.50 seconds. He also produced an improvement of 9.54 seconds in the 50-metre butterfly, finishing 24th in 54.61.
In the 50-metre breaststroke, Samuel placed 22nd with a time of 58.53, improving by 6.59 seconds. He completed the 50-metre backstroke in 54.24, an improvement of 5.64 seconds, and the 50-metre freestyle in 41.93, improving by 1.19 seconds.
Michael Martin also competed in the Boys’ 9–10 category and recorded improvements in all four of his legally completed races.
Michael finished the 100-metre freestyle in 1:31.35, improving by 0.94 seconds. He recorded 38.59 in the 50-metre freestyle, an improvement of 0.81 seconds, and completed the 50-metre butterfly in 47.60, improving by 3.84 seconds.
He also swam the 50-metre backstroke in 47.33, reducing his previous time by 0.63 seconds.
Coach Bennett Williams said the team’s performance demonstrated the value of giving developing swimmers opportunities to compete internationally.
“I am extremely proud of our four swimmers. They competed against talented swimmers from across the region and improved their times in every legally completed event. Daniel reduced his times by 45 seconds, Samuel by more than 33 seconds, Isabelle by more than 22 seconds and Michael by more than six seconds. These improvements show that their training, discipline and hard work are producing positive results,” Williams said.
“Our purpose was not only to compete for medals. We wanted the swimmers to gain international racing experience, build confidence and understand the technical standards required at regional competitions. They represented the Turks and Caicos Islands with pride and good sportsmanship.”
Team Manager Ella Martin played an important role in overseeing the swimmers’ welfare, daily schedules, meals, transportation and general preparation throughout the trip, allowing the athletes to concentrate on their events.
Participation in the Goodwill Championships represents another important step in the development of age-group swimming in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The competition provides younger swimmers with valuable regional experience and prepares them for future opportunities at CARIFTA, CCCAN, PanAm Aquatics, Commonwealth and World Aquatics competitions.
The Turks and Caicos Islands Swim Federation thanked the swimmers’ families, supporters, volunteers and everyone who assisted the delegation.
The Federation congratulated Isabelle, Samuel, Michael and Daniel for their courage, determination and outstanding improvements while proudly representing the Turks and Caicos Islands.
