A Grand Turk man has been found guilty of the 2023 murder of 21-year-old Sevano Wilson Jr., marking a significant step toward justice for the victim’s grieving family and friends.
Lukinson Leger, 22, of West Road, Grand Turk, was convicted following a trial and is scheduled for sentencing on April 7, 2025.
The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF), who said it welcomed the verdict, commended the officers for committing to the trial at times against challenging circumstances.
Acting Superintendent Grantley Williams, Head of Serious Crimes, Safeguarding, and Public Protection, commended, what has been described as the relentless efforts of law enforcement officers throughout the investigation.
“Justice has been served,” Williams said. “This case presented significant challenges, but from the outset, our officers remained steadfast in their pursuit of justice. The evidence gathered was instrumental in securing this conviction, and I extend my gratitude to the officers and the prosecution team. While this verdict cannot bring back Mr. Wilson, I hope it provides some measure of comfort to his loved ones.”
Williams also used the opportunity to urge young people to seek nonviolent ways to resolve conflicts.
“This was a tragic incident,” he stated. “I implore young people to consider peaceful alternatives instead of resorting to violence. Rash decisions can have lifelong consequences. To those still awaiting justice for their loved ones, please know that we have not forgotten you. Our commitment to justice remains unwavering.”
The fatal incident occurred on the evening of September 29, 2023, at a celebratory gathering on Governor’s Beach, Grand Turk. Wilson, of South School Lane, Grand Turk, suffered fatal wounds and was rushed to the Cockburn Town Medical Centre by officers, but he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
After a thorough investigation and consultation with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, authorities formally charged Leger with Wilson’s murder on October 4, 2023.
Leger’s impending sentence is expected to bring closure to Wilson’s family while serving as a sobering reminder of the devastating impact of violent crime.
