Erin to Become Hurricane; No Direct Threat to TCI So Far

Tropical Storm Erin is currently located approximately 1440 miles ESE of Cockburn Town, Grand Turk and is moving west at approximately 17 mph.


Forecast

The core of Erin will pass north of portions of the Leeward Islands, The Virgin Island and Puerto Rico over the weekend. It is expected that TS Erin will develop into a hurricane, Friday August 15th and a major hurricane by the weekend.


Forecast for The Turks & Caicos Islands

Current forecast suggest the center of Tropical Storm Erin is projected to pass East of The Turks & Caicos Islands. There remains a low chance of experiencing Tropical Storm Conditions. Erin is expected to induce cloudy conditions, increased shower and thunderstorm activity, gusty winds and dangerous marine conditions over the Turks and Caicos beginning Sunday August 17th.


Plan to suspend all marine activities. The Public is urged to stay informed as forecasts can change. Follow advisories from the TCI National Weather Service and DDME.


The public is reminded to continue hurricane preparedness initiatives throughout the hurricane season.


      • Purchase and stock up on at least a 3-day supply of non-perishable food and water


      • Assemble an emergency kit (a comprehensive list of supplies can be found on the DDME Social Media pages)


      • Secure your home, ensure that your roof, windows and doors are secured; make any and all necessary repairs. Trim hanging tree branches, clear gutters and remove items that may become projectiles during strong wind.


     • Update and review insurance documents to ensure that is paid and has the relevant coverages.


      • Create an emergency plan, include evacuation routes and nearby shelters.
