FALSE : Police Dismiss Rumors that a Local Man was Among 171 Haitian Migrants Intercepted Wednesday

The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) has officially debunked a highly circulating rumour claiming a local man was among those detained on an illegal migrant boat early Wednesday morning.

A high-level officer confirmed to NewslineTCI that authorities launched an immediate investigation into the claims after the rumours were raised, but official checks revealed them to be entirely false. Police affirmed that all 171 individuals apprehended during the operation are Haitian nationals.

The interception comes amid escalating instability in neighbouring Haiti. The already impoverished French-speaking nation has seen an intensification of gang warfare in recent days, which has claimed dozens of lives, including gang members and innocent civilians, among them women and children, according to multiple reports.

This severe security crisis has driven citizens to seek a better life, forcing many to take to the high seas and risk their lives in the process. The swift response from local law enforcement came after the RTCIPF Marine Branch intercepted the overloaded vessel suspected of illegal migrant smuggling during the early hours of Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The vessel was initially spotted near Northwest Point, Providenciales, by the Marine Operations Centre’s Coastal Radar Unit. Marine Branch officers launched an immediate response, successfully intercepting the vessel before it could make landfall.

The joint operation, which brought together the Marine Branch, Marine Operations Centre, National Intelligence Bureau, and Incident Command, safely escorted the 171 irregular migrants to South Dock. They have since been handed over to the Turks and Caicos Islands Border Force for legal processing.

This latest operation pushes the total number of maritime migrant interceptions by the RTCIPF in 2026 to approximately 1,075 individuals across eight separate vessels, highlighting the ongoing regional impact of the humanitarian crisis.

Commissioner of Police Fitz Bailey highly commended Acting Deputy Commissioner Kendal Grant for his leadership during the operation, praising the seamless execution, dedication, and coordinated professionalism displayed by all units involved.

The RTCIPF reiterated its commitment to working alongside national and regional partners to secure the borders of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
