Crime sleuths of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force have arrested a 45-year-old Five Cays man in connection with the seizure of a firearm and ammunition.
Police said the incident took place on Sunday on Reese Street in Five Cays. The man is also facing charges of dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol over the prescribed limit.
According to the police, officers attached to the Response and Operations Unit were called to an apartment complex along Reese Street, Five Cays, Providenciales, at about 12:40a.m., Sunday, after a report to the Police Control Room that assistance was needed in relation to a firearm incident.
On arrival, they spotted the man attempting to flee the scene in a grey Suzuki Swift motor car bearing no registration plate.
Officers gave chase onto the South Dock Road before successfully intercepting the vehicle. During the vehicle search, a black firearm with four rounds of ammunition was found and taken by the Forensic Support Unit for processing. Further investigation revealed a single round of ammunition was found on the suspect.
Later, officers executed an authority to search for firearms and ammunition at the man’s home, and an additional magazine with six rounds of ammunition was discovered.
Acting Commissioner of Police, Kendall Grant praised the work of his men, who lauded for their encouragement and professionalism in carrying out the operation.
"This is excellent work by our Officers. I want to publicly express my thanks to them for their continuous professional work in protecting our communities,” he said, noting that the man’s arrest eliminated one more threat.
“Although the suspect was intercepted and arrested safely, we have removed another illegal firearm from our community that could have caused serious injury or death.
“We will continue to work hard and demonstrate bravery in these challenging and dangerous situations. Congratulations to the officers involved for a job well done," Grant stated.
