Governor Appoints TCI Boundaries Commission to Review Electoral Districts

Deputy Governor Her Excellency Anya Williams

In a move aimed at enhancing democratic representation and ensuring equitable electoral boundaries, Her Excellency the Acting Governor Mrs. Anya Williams has appointed a Boundaries Commission for the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Commission, tasked with reviewing and potentially adjusting existing electoral district boundaries, comprises esteemed individuals from various professional backgrounds.

Leading the commission is Rev Dr. Julia E Williams, a retired civil servant and Methodist minister, who assumes the role of Chairman. Joining her are Hon Justice K Neville Adderley M.B. and Ms. Tremaine R S Harvey LLB (Hons), bringing valuable legal expertise to the committee as members.

Under the Constitution's mandate, the Commission enjoys autonomy in regulating its procedures and may seek input from the public, consult on draft reports, and obtain necessary advice. Importantly, the Commission operates independently, free from external influence or control.

The primary objective of the Commission is to assess the current electoral district boundaries and present its findings to the Governor and House of Assembly. Recommendations may include maintaining existing boundaries or proposing alterations to ensure approximate equality in the number of eligible voters within each district.

To facilitate comprehensive deliberations, the Commission has scheduled face-to-face meetings with various community groups across all islands. Commencing on May 13th, 2024, the Commission's itinerary includes visits to Salt Cay, Grand Turk, South Caicos, Middle Caicos, North Caicos, and Providenciales, ensuring that diverse perspectives from across the archipelago are considered.
