LGT, BWIC and Wesley Methodist Crowned Rugby Champions

Louise Garland Thomas High School (LGT) emerged as one of the dominant forces at the TCI Rugby Football Union (TCIRFU) youth championships, capturing both the Under-15 Boys and Under-15 Girls titles during a day of exciting competition at Meridian Field.

Meanwhile, British West Indies Collegiate (BWIC) secured the Under-18 Girls crown after a dramatic overtime victory, while Wesley Methodist School claimed the Under-18 Boys championship following a disciplined defensive performance in the final.

 

Sixteen teams competed on Saturday, May 9, in championship action across four divisions after qualifying from a field of 22 schools that participated in round-robin competition during April.

LGT put on an impressive di

splay in the Under-15 divisions, dominating the boys competition with an emphatic 15-0 victory over BWIC in the gold medal match after defeating International School 11-5 in the semi-finals.

 

The LGT girls were equally dominant, overcoming BWIC in a closely fought semi-final before delivering a commanding 12-0 performance over Provo Middle School in the championship match to secure the gold medal.

BWIC captured the Under-18 Girls title after an intense and dramatic final against Clement Howell High School. The two evenly matched teams battled through regulation without either side scoring before BWIC finally found an opening during overtime to secure a narrow 2-0 victory.

 

Wesley Methodist secured the Under-18 Boys championship with a 4-0 win over HJ Robinson High School. Wesley's disciplined defensive effort frustrated HJ Robinson throughout the contest, while timely attacking play proved enough to secure the title.

 

Other medal winners included International School, which earned bronze in the Under-15 Boys division after defeating Provo Middle School, while BWIC claimed the Under-15 Girls bronze medal.

LGT also secured bronze in the Under-18 Girls competition after defeating HJ Robinson, while TCIPS claimed bronze in the Under-18 Boys division following a lengthy contest against Marjorie Basden High School that stretched into double overtime.

 

Tournament organizers said the event ran smoothly, with games beginning on schedule and participants displaying positive sportsmanship throughout the day.

 

The TCIRFU executive and volunteers were also praised for their continued efforts to promote rugby and positive social development among young people across the Turks and Caicos Islands.
