The Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, through its Quality Assurance Unit (QAU), will begin the roll-out of the National School Inspection Programme in October 2026. The Programme is a core part of the Unit's quality assurance function and aims to raise standards and outcomes for every learner in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

From the outset, the QAU has been very clear in its function as it relates to the programme, inspection is not something done to schools, but a partnership with schools. Each inspection will give schools an honest, evidence-based picture of where they stand, recognise what is working well, and identify clearly what must improve so that every child benefits from a quality education. The Ministry has equally invested in the readiness of the Unit to effectively carry out this important role, by coordinating extensive training with a cadre of educators in the Principles and Practices of School Inspection.

Schools are currently intentionally engaged in preparing themselves for their notification of inspection through examining their record management, systems and procedures in the schools. This comes after two years of sensitization and training sessions conducted by the QAU introducing school leaders and staff to the School Inspection Framework: its five-phase inspection process, the eight inspection areas and the five-point judgement scale.

Training sessions focused on documentation, record keeping, school financial management, and the Ministry's Integrated Approach to School Improvement, emphasizing the importance of school self-evaluation and school improvement planning and linking them with inspection and reporting in one continuous cycle. The QAU also developed brochures to inform all stakeholders of school inspections and what happens in the process.

The Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, the Honourable Rachel Taylor commenting on the roll out emphasized that “The National School Inspection Programme is a firm commitment by the Ministry and this Government to raising standards and accountability in our schools, so that every child has the opportunity to succeed." She also added that “as the Ministry seeks to improve the overall quality of education and the learning environment, we are mindful that our efforts are about the students and student learning; the main clients in this process. Our role is to enhance the quality of education they receive every day.”

In commenting on the roll-out Quality Assurance Manager, Mrs Kadean Cunningham expressed that “ the Unit is committed to establishing a national school inspection system that is rigorous, transparent, and grounded in the realities of our TCI schools. Parents, teachers and principals are encouraged to view inspection as a collaborative process that aims to support improvement, not to find fault.”

The aim of the QAU is to contribute to the overall development and maintenance of standards in education and to foster an environment conducive to quality teaching, effective learning and overall academic excellence within our schools.
