Oral Health Month 2026: “Brush, Floss and Smile”
The Dental Department within the Ministry of Health and Human Services joins the Turks and Caicos Islands community in observing Oral Health Month 2026 under the theme “Brush, Floss and Smile.”
Throughout October, residents are being reminded that a healthy smile begins with simple, consistent daily habits. Good oral health is about much more than appearance: it is an important part of overall health and well-being.
Oral diseases, including tooth decay and gum disease, remain significant public health concerns. When left untreated, they can cause pain, infection, difficulty eating and speaking, and can contribute to missed school days, lost work time and a reduced quality of life. Oral health is also closely connected with general health, with associations between poor oral health and conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular and respiratory disease, as well as adverse pregnancy outcomes.
The encouraging message is that many common oral diseases are preventable.
· Residents are encouraged to take simple but important steps to protect their oral health:
· Brush teeth thoroughly twice each day using fluoride toothpaste.
· Floss or clean between the teeth daily.
· Limit frequent consumption of sugary foods and drinks.
· Encourage healthy oral hygiene habits from early childhood.
· Visit a dentist regularly for oral examinations, preventive care and professional cleaning.
· Seek dental care promptly if experiencing toothache, swelling, bleeding gums or other oral health concerns.
The Minister of Health and Human Services, Hon. Kyle Knowles, emphasized the importance of making oral health a priority for individuals and families across the Turks and Caicos Islands:
“Good oral health is an important foundation for good overall health. The simple habits we practise each day: brushing, flossing, making healthy food choices and attending regular dental check-ups can prevent many common oral health problems and help us maintain healthy smiles throughout our lives.
As we observe Oral Health Month 2026, I encourage every resident of the Turks and Caicos Islands to make oral health a priority for themselves and their families. Parents and caregivers have an especially important role in helping our children develop healthy habits from an early age. Prevention remains one of our strongest tools in protecting the health of our people.
Let us use this month as an opportunity to recommit ourselves to healthier habits because a healthier mouth contributes to a healthier individual, a healthier family and ultimately a healthier Turks and Caicos Islands.”
Activities Throughout October
During Oral Health Month, the Dental Department will conduct activities across the islands aimed at increasing awareness, promoting prevention and empowering residents to take greater responsibility for their oral health.
Schools and communities will have opportunities to engage with dental professionals through oral health education sessions, screenings, practical demonstrations and community outreach activities. These initiatives will reinforce the importance of prevention while providing residents with practical information that can be incorporated into their daily routines.
The Ministry of Health and Human Services encourages parents, caregivers, teachers, employers and community leaders to support the Oral Health Month campaign and help spread the message that maintaining good oral health is a shared responsibility.
A healthy smile is a reflection of a healthy life.
This Oral Health Month, take responsibility. Take action. Take pride in your oral health.
Brush. Floss. Smile.
Be consistent. Be committed. For a healthier you and a brighter smile.
