Mr. Fulford was received by Mr. Jung-Hyuk Hur, First Vice President of International Affairs, and Ms. Chay-Eun Ha, Second Vice President of International Affairs.

The Korean representatives spoke of an Association serving more than 30,000 lawyers, with a governance body comprising approximately 40 members. The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on the organisation and work of their respective Associations.

Mr. Fulford conveyed greetings on behalf of the Turks and Caicos Bar Association and welcomed the opportunity to discuss shared professional interests.

Electronic court systems featured prominently in the discussions. The Korean representatives explained that Korea has had electronic civil court processes for 22 years and has now moved fully to electronic criminal court processes. Their experience provided a valuable perspective on the transition from paper-based systems to digital court working.

Mr. Fulford shared developments in the Turks and Caicos Islands, including the judiciary’s own civil electronic filing and digital court processes, and its approach to the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

The Korean representatives also discussed their Association’s work on guidance concerning AI in legal practice. The exchange highlighted the importance of embracing technological advances while maintaining professional standards and confidence in the administration of justice.

The discussions extended to continuing legal education and international arbitration, including the value of exchanging knowledge and strengthening practitioners’ skills, particularly those of younger lawyers.

Mr. Fulford emphasised the importance of ensuring that the TCI legal profession remains equipped to meet the demands of an evolving economy and increasingly complex legal work.

The courtesy call established contact between the two Associations and provided a useful exchange of experiences on shared professional interests.
