Thelma Lightbourne Primary School in Providenciales was ordered closed on November 26th, 2025, following an outbreak of vomiting, diarrhea, and flu-like symptoms among students and staff.
The closure will remain in place until further notice.
Health officials say the decision was taken to protect the wellbeing of the school community while investigations are carried out. Teams from Primary Health Care and Environmental Health are now scheduled to conduct on-site assessments and oversee the implementation of safety measures.
Teachers and students experiencing symptoms are urged to remain at home, seek medical attention, and return to school only after full recovery to help prevent further spread of the illness.
Parents and guardians are reminded to reinforce proper hygiene practices, including:
· Frequent handwashing with soap and water
· Covering coughs and sneezes
· Avoiding touching the face and mouth
· Washing hands before preparing and eating food
· Washing hands after using the bathroom
Health authorities advise seeking medical care if vomiting or diarrhea continues or if signs of dehydration appear. Providing samples to health care providers will assist officials in identifying the source of the outbreak and guiding appropriate public health interventions.
Minister of Health and Human Services Kyle Knowles said his Ministry is working closely with education officials to ensure the situation is swiftly contained.
“My Ministry remains committed to ensuring that the relevant support is provided to the Thelma Lightbourne Primary School and colleagues in the Ministry of Education to mitigate against any further spread of illness within the institution. My Public Health team will conduct on-site visits and provide advice on further measures to ensure that students and staff can safely resume classes,” he stated.
Authorities thank parents and the wider community for their cooperation as efforts continue to restore a safe and healthy learning environment.
