Tiny Invaders, Big Impact: Island-wide survey uncovers the hidden world of ants across the Turks and Caicos Islands

They may be tiny, but ants can have an enormous impact on island life. Some invasive species threaten native wildlife, damage crops, disrupt ecosystems and create health and safety concerns for communities.
That is why the Darwin Plus locally funded project DPL00130 launched the first island-wide effort to document ant diversity in Providenciales, North Caicos, Middle Caicos, South Caicos, Grand Turk and East Caicos spear headed by the Departments of Agriculture and Fera Science Ltd. in the United Kingdom.

What did the survey find?
Teams used baiting, leaf-litter collection and careful hand searches to sample ants in different environments. More than 30 species have been collected, and that number may rise as the project is completed.
About 40% of the species recorded are native to the region. The remainder are non-native and include two well-known invaders: the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) and the big-headed ant (Pheidole megacephala).

A human footprint in the findings
Providenciales—the largest and most populated island and the main centre of trade—recorded the greatest variety of ants. By contrast, no non-native ants were collected on uninhabited East Caicos.
The contrast reinforces an important lesson: people, goods, plants, soil and cargo can unintentionally help invasive ants move from place to place.
Turning research into protection
The project is not only counting ants. It is building the local skills and systems needed to detect new arrivals early and respond before they become widely established.
Local teams trained
Staff from the Department of Agriculture, Environmental Health and partner organizations received hands-on training in surveillance, ant identification and rapid-response procedures. Newly developed identification guides and reporting forms will help teams retain and share that knowledge after the project ends.
High-risk entry points checked
Plant nurseries and cargo docks received special attention because they are among the places where invasive ants are most likely to arrive, establish and spread. Inspections, stronger biosecurity practices, baiting and habitat isolation can help contain invasive populations.

A legacy beyond the project
Although Darwin Plus Local funding is nearing completion, trained staff, practical tools and response protocols will support continued surveillance and management. Stronger partnerships and public awareness will help the Turks and Caicos Islands detect, manage and prevent future incursions.
The message is simple: protecting our islands begins with noticing the small things.
