A vacation to the Turks and Caicos Islands ended in tragedy on Tuesday, April 29, for a visitor from Pennsylvania, who drowned while swimming at Grace Bay Beach, one of Providenciales’ most iconic destinations.
The deceased has been identified as 68-year-old Robert Mark Tjiattas, an American tourist. According to witnesses, he was observed floating unresponsively in the water before being pulled to shore by fellow beachgoers. CPR was administered immediately while emergency services were en route.
Responding officers from the Grace Bay Mobile Unit, along with medical personnel, arrived quickly and continued life-saving efforts. Mr. Tjiattas was transported to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead at 11:17 a.m. by a medical doctor.
Initial findings indicate that Mr. Tjiattas had been swimming prior to the incident. While there is no indication of foul play, the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RT&CIPF) has launched a full investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the drowning.
Authorities have not commented on whether any pre-existing medical conditions may have contributed to the incident. Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
Grace Bay Beach, known for its calm turquoise waters and powdery white sand, draws thousands of visitors each year and is often ranked among the best beaches in the world.
