In this week’s Voices from the Streets, I had the privilege of speaking with Lloydel Swan in a conversation that was both inspiring and deeply encouraging.

Lloydel shared his remarkable journey to becoming a successful local pilot, candidly recounting the many challenges he faced along the way.

From early on, he understood that a dream deferred does not have to be a dream denied. Though the road was far from easy, he held fast to his belief that God had a plan for him. Today, he is a retired pilot.

One of the most powerful moments he shared was from his childhood: while riding his bicycle behind the Church of God of Prophecy band, a vehicle rolled over him. Miraculously, he survived. At that moment, he said, it confirmed that his life was protected by divine purpose.

Despite his passion for flying, Lloydel shared that he faced discouragement. The Principal, Mr. Wallace, advised him to study Woodwork and Technical Drawing instead of the Science subjects needed to pursue aviation. Though he went on to attend the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic in Barbados, that his big Sis Lillian provided the opportunity told him he had no choice in the matter. He often felt frustrated and uncertain. At the time, he didn’t realise that God was guiding him along a divine path toward his destiny.

Lloydel shared that after completing his studies, he returned home. One day, while sitting on a wall, overwhelmed by emotion, the late Bishop Frankly Williams passed by and said, “Whatever you’re thinking right now—God’s got you.” That simple statement was the confirmation he needed to keep going.

Though he lacked the financial means to pay for pilot training, God provided through the support of his brother Joe. The rest, as they say, is history. Lloydel’s message is especially directed at young men: a delay in your dream is not a denial. Too many young people, he says, are giving up on their goals for various reasons. His encouragement is clear—keep trying. As long as you’re alive, you haven’t run out of options. With faith in God and the right attitude, your breakthrough will come.

I want to share these key takeaways from Lloydel’s story as an encouragement to someone reading this article.

Believe in Your Worth

Even when others doubt you or try to steer you away from your dreams, trust in your purpose and potential.

Stay Focused on Your Goals

Distractions and setbacks will come, but staying focused helps you avoid negative influences, including violence and crime.

Surround Yourself with Encouragement

Positive mentors, family, and faith leaders can speak life into your journey—just like Bishop Williams did for Lloydel.

Don’t Let Finances Stop You

Resources may be limited but help often comes in unexpected ways. Keep moving forward and stay open to support.

Turn Pain into Purpose

Challenges and trauma can be stepping stones. Lloydel’s survival from a near-death experience became part of his testimony.

Violence Is Not the Answer

When faced with frustration or peer pressure, choose peace. Your future is too valuable to be lost to a moment of anger.

Faith and Attitude Matter

A positive mindset and belief in something greater than yourself can carry you through the darkest times.

Lloydel Swann’s story is more than a personal triumph—it’s a beacon of hope for anyone who has ever faced doubt, delay, or discouragement. His unwavering faith, resilience in the face of adversity, and commitment to his dreams remind us that purpose is often born through perseverance.

Thank you, Lloydel, for sharing your journey so openly. Your life is a testament to the fact that with courage, faith, and the proper support, even the most distant dreams can take flight. May your story continue to inspire generations to rise above their circumstances and soar toward their destiny.
