Youth Tribunal Sparks Debate on Cost of Living vs Economic Growth in TCI

The inaugural Youth Tribunal hosted by the Rotaract Club of Providenciales has earned praise from government leaders and participants alike, following an engaging discussion centered on one of the country's most pressing national issues: whether the Turks and Caicos Islands should prioritize controlling the cost of living over rapid economic development.

The event brought together young professionals and emerging leaders to debate the topic, providing a platform for meaningful dialogue and civic engagement while encouraging youth to contribute to national discussions.

Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Akierra Missick applauded the initiative, saying the event offered valuable insights and highlighted the importance of considering different perspectives.

"We're very grateful for Rotaract, Open Thought and the organizers for putting the Youth Tribunal together," she said. "It's always rewarding to hear both sides of the story, economic growth versus affordable living, and Honorable Jamell and I have some food for thought that will be taken away."

Deputy Premier and Minister of Immigration and Border Services Hon. Jamell Robinson also commended the event, describing it as both energetic and productive.

"Having participated or listened to the presentations this evening, I think it's a great idea and something that they should continue on different topics as well," Robinson said. He added that he had been taking notes throughout the discussions with the intention of considering ideas and solutions during Cabinet discussions.

Director of Youth Affairs Jatavia Howell emphasized the importance of youth participation in national conversations, stating that young people experience the country's challenges firsthand.

"We feel the cost of groceries, transportation, rent, and opportunities in real time," Howell said. "We speak from lived experiences, fresh perspectives, and a genuine desire to see the country thrive for generations to come."

Howell also praised the organizers for creating an environment where young voices can be heard and valued.

"Too often, young people are told that we are the leaders of tomorrow. But events like this remind us that we are contributors of today. Our voices matter now."

She noted that the discussion surrounding economic growth and affordability remains one of the most relevant topics facing the nation today, calling for a balanced approach that considers sustainability, opportunity and equity.

Nideka Missick of the Rotaract Club of Providenciales echoed those sentiments, highlighting the role of young adults in shaping the future of the country.
