Dudley Lister Lewis, the Supervisor of Elections, is reminding employers of their obligation to ensure employees who are registered voters are given the opportunity to cast their votes during the upcoming General Election, scheduled for Friday, February 7, 2025.
Polling stations across all islands will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Employers are reminded of their legal responsibilities under Section 67 of the Elections Ordinance, which stipulates the following:
· Employers must allow employees who are registered voters a reasonable period to vote on polling day.
· No deductions should be made from employees' pay or other remuneration for time taken to vote.
· Employers must not impose penalties, intimidation, undue influence, or any interference with employees exercising their voting rights.
Lewis pointed out that failure to comply with these provisions constitutes an offence. Employers found guilty could face a fine of up to $1,000, imprisonment for six months, or both upon summary conviction.
Employers are urged to act in accordance with the law to support the democratic process during the upcoming elections.
