Government Steps Up Consumer Protection Enforcement

The Government is stepping up efforts to strengthen consumer protection with a nationwide compliance drive aimed at ensuring retail businesses comply with the Consumer Protection Ordinance.

The Department of Trade, Industry and Fair Competition has announced that inspections of retail establishments across the Turks and Caicos Islands will form part of the initiative. Businesses in Providenciales have been advised that inspections will be conducted from July 13–17, 2026.

The Department said the exercise supports its mandate to promote and enforce the Consumer Protection Ordinance, which provides important safeguards for consumers in the supply of goods and services throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Inspectors will focus particularly on Parts IV and V of the Ordinance, which set out the duties of providers to consumers. These provisions establish the standards businesses and service providers must meet to ensure fair treatment of consumers and the delivery of quality goods and services.

According to the Department, the compliance drive aims to:

  • Ensure businesses understand and comply with their obligations under the Consumer Protection Ordinance.

  • Increase awareness of practices that may constitute misleading or deceptive conduct, false representations, or other unfair business practices.

  • Educate businesses on the consumer complaints process and the enforcement mechanisms available when violations occur

  • Inform providers of the penalties and fines that may apply in cases of non-compliance.

  • Promote and strengthen consumer protection and consumer affairs throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The Department is encouraging all businesses to familiarize themselves with the requirements of the Consumer Protection Ordinance and to take the necessary steps to ensure full compliance before inspections begin.

The Consumer Protection Ordinance and related legislation are available on the Government's Consumer Affairs website.
