The Turks and Caicos Islands Government has committed to providing financial aid and deploying manpower to assist Jamaica following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa on Tuesday, October 28.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall as a Category 5 storm, ripping off roofs, causing widespread flooding, severing roadways, destroying crops, and leaving most of the country without power. The storm’s impact is expected to last for years, with initial estimates of damage reaching approximately $US15 billion.

The storm was also projected to affect the Turks and Caicos Islands. However, as it emerged from Cuba, Melissa drifted north of our islands, sparing us from its full fury and only bringing light showers to our shores.

In a national address on Thursday, October 30, Premier Hon. Washington Misick announced that a contingent from the TCI Regiment will be sent to aid affected areas, in addition to offering financial support.

“Hurricane Melissa has now passed by our islands, sparing us from its worst effects,” the premier said. “We are grateful for our safety.”

Premier Misick added: “We are preparing a team from our Regiment to provide direct assistance where it is most needed. We are also committed to making a financial contribution to support the recovery and rebuilding efforts.”

The premier pointed out that while he was happy Melissa did not impact the Turks and Caicos Islands, the country made the necessary preparation. The premier also thanked the relevant agencies and individuals who made the preparation possible.

“As the storm threatened our shores, our community stood vigilant—police, firefighters, healthcare workers, utility crews, disaster management teams, the Regiment, and volunteers.

“Your relentless preparation, vigilance, and dedication ensured our communities' safety and protected our people amid the threat.

“Although we were spared, it was your unwavering commitment that gave us the confidence to face the storm. You are the foundation of our resilience, and we honor your service. Thank you for your bravery, professionalism, and love for our country.”

He pointed out that while the TCI dodged Melissa’s wrath, some of our neighbors did not, and so, it is only right to assist where possible.

“While our islands were spared, we must remember our regional neighbors. In Haiti, Cuba, and especially Jamaica, the damage has been severe. Jamaica, in particular, has experienced catastrophic destruction, displacing families, destroying communities, and altering lives forever.

“On behalf of the Turks and Caicos Islands, I want to assure our Jamaican friends that they are not alone. The TCI Government stands in solidarity with Jamaica during this difficult time.

“Let us continue to pray for those in our region suffering loss and hardship. And let us act—not just with words, but with compassion and action. Together, as one Caribbean family, we will emerge stronger,” the premier concluded.
