In this week’s article, Voices from the Streets, I want to share the perspectives of 19-year-old Luis Chavez, a young man who exemplifies positive attributes and continues to make a difference in his community.

Several years ago, I met Luis as the genius behind the Eco Warriors initiative, which spanned into Let’s Clean TCI. This has been well-received and supported throughout the country.  Luis is the National Park Facilities Manager for the DECR and an alumnus of The Turks and Caicos Islands Community College. Luis’ response to addressing the ongoing violence among youths is to hold judgment until you get to know the individual. He shared that there is still the perception in the country that how someone appears, or dresses determines if they are good or bad. In simple terms, these persons are labelled as ‘gangsters.

Unfortunately, this type of stereotype may help to push young people who come from families experiencing economic challenges into a life of crime.  Luis shared that it is time for this type of mindset to be replaced with one that is kind and helpful, as there are genuine struggles that young people living in the Turks and Caicos Islands face.

Luis believes that there is no perfect person, as we all have flaws and will all make mistakes. Young people need to know they can mess up and seek forgiveness without their mistakes constantly dangling over their heads.  Luis shared that he is not advocating for negative behaviour or using it as an excuse for young people to engage in unhealthy behaviour but to bring awareness that it is tough being a young person in today’s society.

He shared that many opportunities arise for young people like him to make a positive difference in their communities.  However, the fear of failure, criticism and judgement from others often keeps them from embracing these opportunities.  Luis admonished that we should never let others' opinions stop us from pursuing our goals and chasing our passion.  He cautioned the youths never to allow their environment to be their teacher. Instead, remain focused and keep their head up and chins held high.

He shared that community projects are a great way to engage in positive activities that can keep them busy and out of trouble. Luis emphasised the importance of never giving up on our young men because there is good in everyone. With love, support and kindness, many young people can still be saved from making terrible choices that prematurely end their lives.

Luis Chavez is an inspiring young man with a powerful message. His work with the Eco Warriors and his role as the National Park Facilities Manager shows his dedication to positively impacting his community. It’s great to see someone advocating for understanding and kindness, especially towards young people who face many challenges.

Luis’s perspective on not judging others based on appearances and his call for a more supportive and forgiving society is critical. Stereotypes can be harmful and push individuals towards negative paths. By promoting a mindset of empathy and support, Luis is helping to create a more inclusive and understanding community.

His advice to young people to stay focused, pursue their passions, and not be deterred by others’ opinions is very empowering. It reminds us that despite the obstacles, there are always opportunities to make a positive difference. Luis recently lost his mother, Mrs Patty Serpas, a beloved Spanish teacher from the Holy Family Academy. I use this opportunity to extend my deepest condolences to the family and to remind Luis that his mother was incredibly proud of the young man that he has become.  Please keep the family in your prayers.
