Why Blood Sugar Affects Your Mood

Why they happen and how to support your body

Evening cravings are rarely about willpower. They are signals. Often, they reflect imbalanced blood sugar, unmet energy needs, or unmanaged stress during the day.

When you understand the root cause, you can respond with support rather than guilt.  If you restrict through the day or eat too little protein, your blood sugar dips at night. This can trigger cravings for quick energy. Stress can push your cortisol higher in the evening which leaves you feeling wired then searching for comfort food.

Poor sleep the night before also makes cravings stronger. Many women think cravings mean they should tighten up their eating. In reality, most need more nourishment earlier. Balanced meals with fibre, protein, and healthy fats help stabilise your energy so your evenings feel calmer.

A nutrient rich afternoon snack can also prevent binge like hunger later. Options like berries with yogurt or tuna on crackers keep glucose steady. Hydrating during the day supports cravings too.

Dehydration and mineral imbalance can make you feel hungrier when you are not.

When cravings arise, pause and check in. Are you actually hungry? Are you tired? Are you overstimulated? Understanding the signal leads to kinder choices.

Evening Cravings Are a Message

Your body is not working against you. It is communicating. When you nourish it consistently, cravings soften naturally.
