A male suspect is currently in police custody following a dramatic exchange of gunfire between the police and a carload of men in Kew Town on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.
According to preliminary police reports, officers were patrolling Norway Road when they observed a red Suzuki Swift vehicle speeding past without a license plate. The officers initiated a pursuit and attempted to intercept the vehicle, which resulted in the occupants opening fire on the police.
In response, the officers discharged their firearms. Amid the exchange, one occupant of the vehicle surrendered, while three others fled the scene on foot. No members of the public were injured during the incident, and the police officers involved emerged unscathed.
As is standard protocol, the circumstances surrounding the incident and the discharge of the officers' firearms are currently under review, according to the communication arm of the force.
The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RTCIPF) is urging the public to assist with the investigation. Anyone with information about the identities of the men who fled is asked to contact the nearest police station, call 911, reach out to the Serious Crime Unit at 231-1842, or anonymously provide information through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477.
Additionally, individuals are invited to download the Crime Stoppers P3 app to share information anonymously. According to the police, cooperation of the public could be vital in ensuring these individuals are brought to justice and enhancing the safety of the community.
